Vergil and his brother Dante are the twin sons of Eva, a healer from the Northern Water Tribe, and Sparda, a legendary warrior from the Fire Nation.

Sparda vanished while the twins were still young, leaving Eva to take care of them alone. One day, shortly after the boys' eighth birthday, the family was ambushed by a small army that consisted mostly of firebenders and chi-blockers sent by Mundus -- a lifelong rival of Sparda's who leads an underground organization (likely a branch of the New Ozai Society).

During the ambush, Eva was killed and the twins were separated, each believing the other to be dead. Vergil was taken to the Fire Nation and assimilated into Mundus' organization, while Dante was left behind in Republic City to fend for himself.

Due largely to his isolation and the trauma of losing his family, Vergil is calculating and distant, focused solely on gaining the power he needs to take down the person that attacked his home and took his mother and brother from him. He's used his time as a captive to his advantage, learning advanced information about the inner workings of the underworld to help further him on his quest.

After years of working his way up in the ranks, Vergil decided that he would need more specific training if he was going to defeat Mundus. Since it's difficult to train as a waterbender in the Fire Nation, he would need to return to one of the water tribes. Knowing that he wouldn't be able to just leave of his own free will, he staged a mechanical failure during a stakeout that exploded the vehicle he had been on. It wasn't until the scene was investigated that one of his superiors realized his body hadn't been recovered and put out an alert to other members.

He is currently wanted by that organization, so he usually travels covered in bandages to conceal his identity.

Since his escape, he returned to the Northern Water Tribe, where he's spent the last six years training extensively in waterbending.

Kuvira

Vergil met Kuvira shortly after the Avatar's battle with The Red Lotus. He was impressed with her leadership skills, as well as the quick thinking that lead her to save Tonraq's life.

When she began her initiative to unite the world under the Earth Empire, Vergil offered his help willingly. Having no specific loyalties to any nation, the only loyalty he has is toward power, which Kuvira was quickly accumulating. It would be better for him to align himself with someone who had such influence. Especially since he's sure that Mundus would challenge her eventually: either over territory, or over the fact that she has absolute power instead of him. When he does, Vergil wants to be on the front lines.

Though he has become a trusted ally, he has never pledged his loyalty verbally. This isn't a way of foreshadowing duplicity -- quite the contrary, actually, as he is loyal to the cause. He just has difficulty giving anyone power over him, rather than engaging in a mutually beneficial partnership. If asked about his loyalty, he will say that talk is cheap, and he prefers to let his actions speak for him.

Vergil is every bit as ruthless as Kuvira, especially without Dante to balance him out. Because he's been devoid of everything that would give him reason to weigh the moral implications of their mission, he has no problem doing whatever it takes to advance the takeover.

Generally, he detests people that want absolute rule, but Kuvira isn't doing it out of an inflated ego. She's genuinely invested in what's best for her people, which makes it easier to handle. That aside, he actually enjoys her company, which is invaluable. He wouldn't be able to work so hard for someone he despised.

Abilities

When he was young, Vergil's mother tried to teach him the art of healing, since he and Dante were constantly injuring one another with their fighting. He studied with her, but was never truly connected to healing, so his ability with it is fairly basic.

His true interest lies with bloodbending. After discovering mention of it in a textbook, he began secretly training himself in the art. First on small animals, then on larger ones. Thanks largely to his tunnel-vision discipline, he's become a very gifted bloodbender, though it's a skill that he rarely uses unless he absolutely has to.

Weapons

Despite being a waterbender and a bloodbender, Vergil also carries an heirloom sword that was left to him by his father, Sparda. Yamato is an o-katana, and one of the two weapons that Sparda used to defeat Mundus. Rebellion, the other sword, belongs to Vergil's twin brother, Dante.

The sword is used when his opponent is a non-bender, as his code of honor won't allow him to use bending against an opponent that can't do the same. The style of swordplay he uses (Iaido to us) is very swift and fluid, which might mean that there's a waterbender influence in the form.

Trivia

- Vergil wears glasses. He has a black, plastic pair as well as a silver, metal-framed pair. He's far-sighted, meaning that he has difficulty seeing things up close. Because his attacks are ranged, he takes his glasses off before going into battle of any type, unless it's with a non-bender where he uses Yamato.

There's also a confident air to it, in a "You'll never get close enough for me to need them" sort of way.

- Vergil is generally very careful about his words. He won't lie, but he will only give fragments of the truth if the full truth isn't an option. For example, if someone asked about his bandages, he would say "I escaped from an explosion" as a way to explain them. It's not a lie, but it implies that he would be disfigured underneath them, which he isn't.

- He isn't the type to bow to someone else, but he will give his partnership willingly if you earn his respect.
